Joe Gothic

Kids and bikes, wherever you are in the world, you’ll find the two together - smiling, aimlessly drifting. The bike for most kids is a first sense of afforded freedom. As we get older that senseless joy for cycling is lost, typically dampened by our transition into adulthood. Yet - there is nothing typical about Joe Warren; a retired professor who, during his tenure at the University of Utah, moonlit as a sound engineer for death metal bands. Since discovering downhill mountain biking at the age of 60 to conquering the most challenging trails across North America, Joe’s story is anything but ordinary. He was born in 1947 in the post-depression ravaged era of Detroit, where most of his friends turned to drugs, or crime. Sometimes both. He now resides in the unwavering beauty of Utah's Wasatch Back, where he ascends mountains the size of skyscrapers. He's an astronaut.

THE BIG ONE

In ROAM Original, “The Big One,” professional surfer Ian Walsh joins a team of Professional Snowboarders including Danny Davis, Nick Russell, Forrest Shearer, Harry Kearney, Jerry Mark, and Clark Henarie as they attempt to summit and ride down Denali, something none of them have done before. Danny Davis, widely recognized as one of the most influential snowboarders of his time, makes him the perfect companion for the trip. With a life dedicated to moving through the mountains, Nick Russell is all about riding in the backcountry to seldom-visited lines. And at the forefront of self-powered backcountry freeriding and splitboard adventures is Forrest Shearer. Together the team relies upon shared knowledge, bringing surf and snowboard culture to the top of North America’s tallest peak.

FINDING BALANCE

Through life we dabble, we try new things, and we test the waters by sticking a toe in. But, every so often something special happens and we can't help but to dive deep. This, my friends, is a hobby and more poetically known as a passion.

Brought to life by Outside TV, my goal with this series is to celebrate those charging their passions while still leading a “normal” life. Cheers to the hobbyists! Episode One features Allen Stoltzfus, an engineer and lover of all things type 2 fun in Winter Park, Colorado.

2019 North Pole Crossing

Mike Horn and Børge Ousland are two of the most accomplished Polar Explorers. In August of 2019, they sailed the Arctic Ocean to cross the North Pole by foot. Myself, Stein Retzlaff and team on the boat documented the expedition and sailed farther north than any non-icebreaking vessel in history. Unfortunately, this is only possible due to the melting arctic regions. Visit fujifilm-x.com to learn more about the expedition.

Friluftsliv is a state of mind, not an activity, nor a competition. It embodies the values of what nature gives in return. A sense of detachment from the daily grind that empowers and re-energizes us to enable longevity and stability in our lives. Friluftsliv, regardless of activity, is simply being in harmony with nature.
